The Scholars, the Intern, and the Scientist: A Walk and Discussion in the Imperial City

Date: Sunday, November 5
Time: 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Cost: 260 RMB, 240 for members includes all entrance tickets.

In the heart of Beijing, between the old outer city walls and the golden rooftops of the Forbidden City, there lay a city within a city. The Imperial City. This inner sanctum surrounding the palace and its environs was once home to eunuchs, officials, scholars, and princes. We will explore this area in a walk and discussion which will take us back in time from the home of the May Fourth Movement, the original campus of Peking University, through the back alleys of the imperial city, and along the (recently restored) waterways of the old Mongolian capital.

Our walk will begin at the Beijing’s East Cathedral and we will then ramble to the old campus of Peking University, the site of the old Imperial City Wall, the hutongs to the northeast of the Forbidden City, and the waterways which lead toward the lakes of Beijing. Along the way, we will talk about the scholars who set the direction for China in the 20th century and beyond. We will discuss the role of Peking University in the history of Beijing and the history of China, including the chubby librarian’s assistant who would go on to lead a nation. We will also look at the canal system of Beijing, the medieval scientist who designed them, and what water means to the city then and now.

Spaces for this walk are limited and registration is required. Details about the walk including meeting points and payment information will be sent by email as part of your your registration confirmation.

We never cancel! If you sign up, we are walking…
